ABSTRACT

This study is designed to identify the incidence of anemia in pregnancy in  ________________________________________________. A historical and statistical survey approach was adopted; antenatal records dating from 2014-2016 were reviewed and analysed to produce data on incidence and some 20 respondents from the study area (10 from each) were surveyed to provide subjective information on other facts and figures concerning anemia in pregnancy. Findings identified incidence of 20.4% in the studied population, i.e. Rumueme community (within a three year period (2014-2016)), this implies that the incidence of anemia in Rumueme community is low, also findings identified more reports of anemia at the first trimester of pregnancy compared to other trimesters; with respect to risk factors encouraging the development of anemia, such factors as poor nutrition, family history, pregnancy, menstruation, chronic conditions and intestinal disorders were accepted; also, there was no significant link between the age of the mother during pregnancy and the development of anemia. Based on the findings, recommended measures to totally eliminate or drastically reduce anemia in Rumueme community were made, such measures includes good and advanced antenatal care, health education on anemia, treatment of malaria, provision of drugs to prevent anemia and promoting safe motherhood practices.
